Psalm 91:1-2
1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
God’s secret place is not for visit but a dwelling place. The shadow of the Almighty is a place of protection, comfort and care. The more we abide in Christ and His word, making Him our life and our dwelling place, the fuller will be our peace and the greater our deliverance in times of danger.
To be shaded by a tree, you’ll have to be under the tree; to be under someone’s shadow, you’ll have to be close to the person. Hence, to be covered by God’s shadow, there must be some kind of intimacy with Him, be very near, close to Him. When we live intimately with God, we will come to know the greatness of His protection that He is our refuge and our mighty fortress. A song writer once sang – “A Mighty Fortress is our God”, the second verse of the hymn says – “Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, were not the right man on our side, the man God’s own choosing…” God’s chosen man is Christ Jesus.
The names of God in verses one and two of Psalm 91:1-2 describe different aspect of His protection:
- Most High: this shows that God is greater than any threat we face
- Almighty: this emphasis God’s power to confront and destroy every enemy
- The Lord: this assures us that God’s presence is always with us
- My God: this expresses the truth that God has chosen to fellowship intimately with those who trust in Him
Prayer: Lord, give me grace to dwell in your secret place, let me remain secured and rested under your shadow. Oh let my life be a reflection of you, wherever I go and in whatever I do. As I spend more time in fellowship with you, let the expressions of your love and protection be manifested in me in the name of Jesus.
